This image from the Gemini North telescope in Hawai‘i reveals a pair of interacting spiral galaxies — NGC 4568 (bottom) and NGC 4567 (top) — as they begin to clash and merge. The galaxies will eventually form a single elliptical galaxy in around 500 million years.

Hawaii’deki Gemini North teleskobundan alınan bu görüntü, birbiriyle etkileşen bir çift sarmal gökadayı – NGC 4568 (altta) ve NGC 4567’yi (üstte) – çarpışmaya ve birleşmeye başlarken ortaya koyuyor. Galaksiler sonunda yaklaşık 500 milyon yıl içinde tek bir eliptik galaksi oluşturacaklar.
Fotoğrafta bizlerden 60 milyon ışık yılı uzaklıkta çarpışan iki spiral galaksi görünüyor. Üsteki galaksinin ismi NGC4567, alttaki galaksinin ismi ise NGC4568’dir. Bu çarpışma 500 milyon yıl sürecek ve en sonunda tek bir galaksi haline dönüşecek.
